Long-term Investment in Play for Wotton-Under-Edge
We’ve got some great news to share — Wotton‑under‑Edge Town Council has committed to three years of funding for community play.
At a time of rising costs and change across local government, this long‑term investment shows a strong commitment to children, young people, and families in the town. It means our Play Rangers can continue delivering free, regular play sessions — including during school holidays.
Ben Morris, Director of Play, said:
“We’re incredibly grateful for the trust the Town Council has placed in our team and in the power of play. Children’s services are often the first to be cut, but this investment shows real forward thinking and a commitment to supporting young people and the wider community.”
The Town Council told us:
“Wotton Under Edge Town Council moved from a one‑year to a three‑year contract with Play Gloucestershire after a group of young people spoke at a council meeting. They shared how much the sessions meant to them — the friendships they’d built and the fun they had — and wanted reassurance they would continue.

The longer contract gives that stability, while also creating new opportunities. It allows us to develop volunteering pathways into paid roles for 16‑year‑olds, helping them build confidence, experience, and CVs. It also supports the growth of smaller, more targeted and therapeutic play sessions in schools, with the flexibility to work with partners and explore joined‑up funding, including mental health support.
Alongside this, our free, open‑access community play sessions ensure that children, young people, and families of all ages can take part without barriers. These spaces bring communities together, support social connection, and give everyone the chance to enjoy play, fresh air, and shared experiences regardless of circumstance.
Just as importantly, this approach helps us build strong, trusted relationships in the community — so needs are spotted early and those who require extra support can be properly advocated for.”
